Henry Fiol - Fe, Esperanza y Caridad

For our fourth post, we are offering you some SON, from New York!
Son is a Cuban music gender that gets straight to the heart. It is a way to mean rythms in spanish, it started to be popular in the 30's in Cuba.
It is one of the most influential and widespread forms of Latin American music.
Its derivatives and fusions, especially "Salsa", have spread across the world.

If you like this kind of sound then you will enjoy coming back on the blog to see what's happening because we have some excellent references to share with you. We promise that you will enjoy your rides at work and that you will step a few moves even if you are tired when coming back late at night.

-----------------------
Henry Fiol is for us a amazing artist to feature.
Born in 1947 in  NYC, USA and son of Puerto Rican and Italian American parents
Fiol acquired his skills as a singer and conga player by joining in with voices and percussion jam sessions called rumbones, which often occurred in the streets of Latin neighbourhoods, on beaches, or in parks.

He slowly  development of his own smooth and entrancing vocal style,
Influenced by some of the greatest cuban soneros
Cheo Marquetti, Abelardo Barroso

It is amazing to discover that he originally was a Doo-Wop fan, a music gender exploding in the 50's letting more or less 15.000 bands releasing at least 1 album of this gender:  take a while to listen to "Earth Angel " from the Penguins : it is very probable that you already heard that before).

He became a Latin music convert in the early 60s after seeing the band of Rafael Cortijo with Ismael Rivera while visiting his family in Puerto Rico.  It is an album that we had strongly tought to review by as we speak about it now we will prioritize other great references.

The Newyorican Touch
Henry Fiol he is not the most characteristic kind of Sonero.
Fiol’s research into Cuban roots led to a fascination with the Afro-Cuban style, and he started creating his own New York version.
He tried to stay close to the rhythmic roots, while at the same time adding a contemporary touch to the lyrics and the arrangements. If I had to label or categorize my sound, I wouldn’t really call it “Salsa”. I’d probably call it “Montuno”, “Típico”, “Son Moderno”, or as some have called it, “Corazón Music” (literally: Heart Music)’ - from the liner notes to the compilation Sonero.

Fe, Esperanza y Caridad
In 1980, Fiol made his solo debut with the deservedly bestselling Fe, Esperanza Y Caridad on SAR Records, on which the label’s co-founder, Roberto Torres, produced and performed.
